‘Los Goonies’ y ‘Gremlins’ volverán a la pantalla grande con nuevas entregas
Warner Bros has new movies in development for The Goonies and Gremlins, as reported by Deadline. According to the cited source, the studio is currently working on sequels for the iconic films from the 1980s.
As of now, WB has not made any official announcements regarding this, and the publication does not provide further details on the matter. However, if both initiatives are confirmed, it will show the studio’s desire to capitalize on the nostalgia still generated by these two iconic intellectual properties in the world of cinema.
The publication mentions the return of The Goonies and Gremlins as part of Warner Bros’ strategy to bet on franchises to revitalize their film business commercially.
In this regard, initiatives related to a fifth Matrix movie, a sequel to Practical Magic, the next film in the Lord of the Rings series, and the upcoming installments of James Gunn’s new DC Universe like Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and Clayface are also mentioned.
Of the sequels linked to the 80s titles, the one that has been talked about the most in recent years is the third installment of Gremlins. Work on a third film in the beloved saga began in 2017, but there were no real advances publicly known. It is known that the script is being handled by Chris Columbus, who wrote the original film, although it is unknown if he will also direct it.
As for The Goonies, rumors of a sequel have been circulating for years but have never materialized. On more than one occasion, it was said that the original cast members were willing to return, but Warner Bros was not keen on making a sequel. Richard Donner, the director, passed away in 2021.
The sequels for The Goonies and Gremlins are on the way
The Goonies and Gremlins were two of the major cinematic events of the 80s alongside titles like Back to the Future, Stand by Me, Lethal Weapon, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and Die Hard. Both films, produced by Amblin Entertainment, Steven Spielberg’s company, became cult classics for fans.
It is worth noting that while Chris Columbus wrote the scripts for both films and is involved in the third Gremlins installment, it is unknown if he is also part of The Goonies sequel.
Despite their commercial success and critical acclaim, Gremlins and The Goonies stood out for launching young talents like Corey Feldman, who was part of both films and became an immovable figure in the main teenage movies of the time, as well as for boosting other actors who managed to establish themselves in Hollywood like Josh Brolin, Sean Astin, and Ke Huy Quan.
As reported by the British newspaper The Sun months ago, the The Goonies sequel was advanced, and the original cast members were willing to return. Regarding Gremlins 3, it is unknown if the plan involves bringing back the actors from the first two parts.
