It all happened during a panel organized by the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. Ruffalo, who was just nominated for an Oscar for his role in Poor Creatures, attended the event. The moderator, journalist Anne Thompson, wanted to dig deeper and asked about Marvel’s future. She asked if he would appear in Captain America 4, to which the actor responded without hesitation, «Yes!»

His response was surprising due to the firmness with which Mark Ruffalo stated it. Marvel is known for maintaining strict secrecy around its projects, and the actor’s presence in the film had not been confirmed. Nevertheless, Thompson persisted and asked, «Are you allowed to talk about this?» to which Ruffalo confidently replied, «Yes, it’s going to be great!» before moving on to other topics. However, a few hours later, Marvel came out to deny the actor’s statements.

A report published by Variety indicates that several sources suggest that Ruffalo made a mistake. The version provided is that the actor thought he was being asked if the next Marvel movie would be Captain America: Brave New World, not if he would appear in it. This supposedly was a lapse that caused a commotion among the franchise’s fans for several hours. The arrival of Ruffalo would make sense from a narrative perspective.

Hulk in Captain America 4 or in a standalone movie?

What is certain is that Harrison Ford will appear in Captain America 4 as General Thunderbolt Ross. The Indiana Jones and Han Solo actor will take over from the late William Hurt to lead the character to the presidency of the United States. Additionally, there are rumors that the fearsome general will eventually become the dangerous Red Hulk, as in the comics. The presence of Bruce Banner’s Hulk character would then be fully justified.

These are just rumors, but it is clear that any statement by Ruffalo must be carefully examined. The actor has a long history of making very important Marvel spoilers, so his mention of Captain America 4 could have been added to the list. In the past, Ruffalo first spoiled the endings of Avengers: Infinity War and later Avengers: Endgame. He also accidentally live streamed the first 20 minutes of Thor: Ragnarok before its release.

At least for the coming months, the doubt will linger. However, what already seems inevitable is that Hulk’s future involves being a supporting character in other films and not starring in his own. «I said [to Kevin Feige]: ‘I would like to take the character from being a raging maniac to an integrated character.’ And he replied: ‘Okay, we’ll do that over the course of four movies.’ We will never give you an independent Hulk movie,» lamented Ruffalo at the event. «I don’t mean to burst anyone’s bubble, but that’s not going to happen,» he revealed.

This means that the alleged plans to bring to the screen the Planet Hulk and World War Hulk storylines do not actually exist. This was rumored after the end of the She-Hulk series, when Bruce Banner returned from the planet Sakaar with his son Skaar. The reality is that the superhero currently has no return date to the MCU in the event that the news about Captain America 4 was indeed a mistake.
